... alrighty, well I finally overcame my anxiety and signed up for a steam account. They did not ask me for my credit card details and they did let me download and install cs 1.6 once I'd given them my cd key for blue shift. It installed onto the same partition as I put the steam installer and so my cs 1.5 is untouched and still working. I had previously downloaded the dedicated server for cs 1.6 and I used the same username and password as for my client download. I ran steam over putty and it updated all my server files for cs and hl and god knows what else (or at least she would if she existed) and i just played on the montreal 1.6 server. Give me a few days to get all my usual bells and whistles installed but basically I don't see any problems with this. I can run both 1.5 and 1.6 from my linux server. I can connect and play on either 1.6 or 1.5 from the same Windows Me games machine. What was all the fuss aboot? (possibly the 10 server versions which just upgraded through) If anyone wants to test the 1.6 server then I will be available. I suggest that we all keep 1.5 installed for the immediate future so we can do a gradual switch over and make sure no-one is left behind.

... anyone who has cs 1.6 or cs:cz installed, please log on to the server at the usual address. Our WONIDs don't appear to give us admin access even though I've installed AdminMod but I think we have Steam IDs instead. If anyone knows their Steam ID, please send it to me so I can make you an admin and if you know how I can find out mine then please explain it to me. I know I appear to be steaming ahead (arf arf) with 1.6 but really its up to you guys when and if we change. But now I've started this upgrade, I'd like to get it all in place so we can switch whenever we're ready. Let me know you're experiences on the server so I've got some feedback. Also, if you want to run the 1.5 server you will need to stop the 1.6 server if its running. To do this, type top -u global and then hit the "k" key and type in the numbers of the processes called "hlds" and "hlds_run". Make sure these processes are gone before you try to start 1.5 or it wont work.

...believe me when I say that you should be able to connect to both. Perhaps the problem before was with Half-life protocol, in which case you need to use a shortcut instead (follow grix's or my instructions - posted several times and still available in the archived pages above). Please make sure that you installed steam to a separate directory entirely different from cs 1.5. Steam will then download your 1.6 into the steam directory and then you're rocking. You'll be able to play BOTH. Good luck

I'd love to test your 1.6 server but I can't even get a connection with Putty ... have you switched the power off or something?

don't know why you can't get on with putty. You don't have a shell account anymore cos that all got lost when my HD died. You can still log on as global though but you don't need to just now. the server was down cos my puttys both died do to chronic neglect work really gets in the way of my server admin - I know! why don't you all chip in so I can look after things full-time? - don't know why I didn't think of that b4. Sign up...
