anyone good at recovering from fucked up windows 2000? installed a printer driver which causes my laptop to reboot whilst starting up - just before logon if i start in safe mode I can logon but i get the message userinit.exe failed to initialize this leaves me with a blank screen and i can pull up task manager with ctrl-alt-del and from task manager i can start explorer manually and run regedit to edit the registry BUT i cannot do any uninstalls or run any useful program!

get the windows2000 disk and reinstall.. thats what i would do

because i love reinstalling windows.. its sooooo much fun!!

I can't help you either am afraid. I'm assuming that you have just the one partition and that you have valuable info on it that you need to backup. option 1: take it to a laptop shop and get them to download the data to DVD option 2: boot into knoppix or somesuch and burn everything to CDrom yourself or transfer across an ethernet cable. You will already have thought about these options so your problem must be more involved. Do you have software installed which you don't have the disks for and can't get hold of? If so maybe its time to come clean - after all you weren't doing anything untoward. So enjoy reinstalling win2k. I can put a copy of another popular OS that dont need a serial number on my server if you need it.

yeah sorry i'm not much help... i've come to rely on XP's "boot with last stable config" option

i have two partitions and I can get the data off it as you say problems are: - installed software that i need and no disks including ArcGIS and MS Office (they were all put on the machine in Tasmania) - i have no windows 200 disks either

can i upgrade from 2000 to xp - if so could you put that popular os on your server nix?

yeah that's the way to go...

not using it at work (only gaming) for the last 5 years I had forgotten how freakin shit it is!
