well found! well thats the end of that, I had hoped to get the printer connected to it, would have save a lot of daily grief ....

do you think I would have problems if I just bought a router and replaced the current one - I wonder if there are reasons not to as I had to go to the swisscom site to find my router password which was not default and it makes we wonder if I have to use their supplied one?

You just need to know what settings they need to connect and whether it is ADSL, VDSL, cable or fibre and get a router that supports it. Keep the old one and you can always put it back.
