seen a P4 2.4ghz, 512 Ram, Ati Radeon Graphics, CD Burner, 40 gig hard drive, 15" blah, blah screen, firewire, network card etc for a bit under a uk grand. A TV out would be good for playing through a larger monitor. If I buy it probably won`t be `till September when I`ll have finished all my gigs and know how much I`ve got to play with (same spec will probably be cheaper then too! Canada looks pretty cheap too, especially if I can get the tax back.

Make sure its also a dvd player. TV out is for tv which is not much use - it is almost certain to support external monitor. US is the cheapest place to get laptops just now although the UK price you found is hard to beat anywhere. The thing that seems to add the money just now is SXGA or above on your display XGA = 1024x768 SXGA = 1450x1024 UXGA = 1600x1200 as a rough guide. The card will probably support higher res on external monitor. You should expect integrated 10/100 NIC and modem but you can also find integrated wireless cards as well just now (make sure its not just "wireless ready"). If you can buy one in a shop, take a careful look at the display for fucked pixels - we had a hellish time returning a toshiba because it had a fucked pixel. Most manufacturers wont repair less than around 15 fucked pixels - outrageous but true!
