Subject: cheap mice and computer questions
PC World are flogging very nice Packard Bell optical wheel mice right know for £9.99 (half price).
Also when I get my laptop it will have XP pre installed, if I want to partition the hard drive is there a way to do it leaving the operating system in place or will I have to re format the entire drive and reinstall the operating system?
Long boring answers can be emailed to me so everyone doesn't have to suffer another bout of geek-threads!

Subject: because the disk management tools in NT/XP only allow you to delete drives...
...and then make new drives in the unpartitioned space (i.e. if you had a c drive and a d drive you could delete d and make two or more drives in its place. If you only have a c drive then you cannot delete this drive and therefore you can't create any more drives. Once more then for clarity: NT/XP doesn't allow you to resize a partition so its not use.
Partition Magic is the only answer I know of. Or of course you can just wipe your machine and use the recovery disk which should allow you to setup your partitions when installing XP - think I did this on the Kaiser's latest machine.
This option also means you can get rid of all that crap that they very kindly filled your machine with to try and stop it going too fast.

Subject: short answer
get a mandrake linux cd
boot the laptop with the cd in the cdrom (funny sliding drawer thingy)
pretend to install linux and select expert mode (cos thats what you are)
you will get the option of resizing existing windows partitions without trashing them

after that bit you can just reboot - no need to actually install a proper operating system - remove linux cd
