everything works fine apart from the fact that it thinks there is no cd drive! At the moment I have the use of an external drive/burner so am functioning pretty normally.

yeah i see what rex is getting at but i don't think laptops are quite as easy to move drives from one ide channel to another - they don't tend to have big open spaces inside and feet of floppy spare cable to play with.

just wondering whether you could test the cd drive with another ide connection .. any way of testing it on a big machine with lots of space? the cd is the most likely problem as the ide controllers should install automatically and the main hdd is working... ? how that relates to your restore points i haven't a clue... they're a waste of space anyhow ... as bad as drive indexing - turn 'em all off! if these disappeared before your xp reinstall it sounds like you managed to turn restore off already.
