och you werent scaring me is phpmyadmin really wide open ? Usually you get to that stuff through the webspace provider, and you do have a password on it. Just because you can see it when you type ls -al at the command line disnae mean that people on the web can see as you do have directory listing turned off , or you have an index.html in plaace ? Anyway going back to the original question about setting the upload folder to being 777 , thats fine, as i said. You will be the only person who has access to the admin as i guess you have chosen a secure password, and to be honest a script kiddy is going to be more in interested in attacking erm .. the royal bank of scotland than your website Did you sort it eventually anyway. with regards to what file permissions are , if i was you i would put into google "what are unix file permissions" And it will all be demystified i am sure So go ahead, change permissions and dont worry Whats the worse that can happen? the website goes down .. but you can restore it from back up anyway

thanks for the reply del, I,ve set the uploads folder to 775, and seems to work ok, the server is on ec2 and i used the amazon linux ami which only allows ssh access, Its the file permissions on the php admin that wide open but cant find any documentation on them, assume that default is ok I think the big red mark denotes symbolic link.
