was having problems uploading a graphic and the only way was - as advised on wp help site - was to chmod 777 the uploads file, is this safe?

when you extract a tqz file and do not define a target location does it install where it is ? was having problems installing the arduino ide which is now working fine ( i think) but know idea where it is......

after looking - duhhh, its in the downloads folder, can i just drag it into usr/share - where the first failed instal went ( missing the main app file )- without gubbing it?

NO ABSOLUTLEY NOT! Just make it writable by the user runs the web server runs as, probably www-data DO NOT MAKE IT EXECUTABLE DO NOT ALLOW PHP CODE TO BE UPLOADED.

Doubtful...there should be a README or INSTALL txt file with instructions on how to install the IDE...

some files will need to go to different directories like: /usr/bin /usr/lib /usr/share etc

what are you trying to do ? If you are uploading new images through the wp admin then you will need to give the webserver write permission to the uploads folder, just that, definitely not any other folders. If you are giving users of your website the ability to post images, well you will need to ensure that only images are allowed by either writing code which checks the mime type, not the extension as i could send a php file named as .jpg and then rename it and voila i have access to your webserver. essentially as grix says Would be better to have more of an idea what you are trying to do as you are scaring me by talking about directories other than www ... sorry for scarring you Del two things going on ( other directories were to do with arduino on pc) As for wordpress I was trying to change header image and was unable to upload it thru wp, or do updates on wp eventually got ssh plug in working to do up dates, but unable to upload media from my machine only way was to 777 uploads folder - upload then change permissions back, tried ssl/filzila but wordpress could not see it. Been trying to get some understanding of file permissions to day arrrrrrrrrrrr! When I do a ls -l on my www my phpadim is wide open and i cant find any info what to set it to, from what I read it is only accessible from localhost but the big red splodge is freeking me out a bit. thanks for you time guys.....
