Subject: LinkSys routers are great
I've used a LinkSys Cable/DSL router (with a LinkSys 5-port switch to knock it up to 8-player gaming) for three years, and have had no problems with it whatsoever. It's been ideal for a smallish LAN (just 4 machines) and running a gameserver, the 5-port switch integrated without any configuration, plus the Steam support area has specific info on configuration of the LinkSys router for running a dedicated server.
For a firewall try the free version of Zone Alarm on each of the machines, or pay a few bucks for the upgrade which works from the router itself.
