...from any servers you may connect to while browsing the web or" remotely administering" . It prevents anyone seeing your real ip address and attempts to defeat anyone trying to trace you using traffic analysis.

howto: Your computer is probably assigned an IP address by a DHCP server which will try to give you the same IP each time by recording a table of Ip addresses mapped to network card MAC addresses. You need to find out the MAC addresses of some of the other computers at work. When that other computer is not being used you can change your network card's MAC address to the MAC address of another machine (you cannot have two network cards with the same MAC address active at the same time - MAC addresses are supposed to be totally unique). Restart your network card or reboot and you will be assigned the IP address that the other computer normally has. disclaimer: if the sys admin is only examining logs then this will work (as long as you change your MAC address back to the original address after performing your nefarious deeds) if the sys admin sees suspicious activity 'live' then assume they will be able to trace the traffic to your physical machine. also bear in mind that if you are successful someone else may be blamed for your actions - so maybe best to spoof the sys admins machine tools: MAC address spoofer/changer and ethereal a network sniffer so you can find out the MAC addresses of other computers on the network. Alternatively open up a command prompt on the machine you are interested in and type: ipconfig /all the MAC address is the "Physical Address"
