Tims computer is fucked. Getting "unmountable boot volume" message. Set bios to boot from cd rom but it doesn't. Tried booting from floppy with cd rom support but no joy either. Think the hard drive might be knacked. Any theories or suggestions?

Get a large magnet and place it over the hard drive. Then pour beer over psu and then switched on. Tim will then have to buy a new one.

sounds worse than the hard drive - if it won't boot from hard drive, cdrom or floppy that's bad might be the motherboard how old is it?

6 years old. It will boot from floppy but only boot floppy we have is a win98 one (but an XP pro CD) If I select 'boot with cd rom support' nothing happens If I type d: setup (or any other letter) nothing happens, If I scandisk from the floppy it won't complete it. Have not tried formatting C as if possible would like to save the data that's on it but if that's the only option the data can be sacraficed Don't understand why it wont boot from the XP CDrom though

could be the ide controller on the motherboard - maybe check the cabling try removing the cdrom and see if its that thats stuffing it up you want to try to isolate what it is thats broken you could also take out his hard drive and try it in another computer - will enable you to back up the data as well - and give his box a clean on the inside - check all the fans are working etc

six years is a good innings, maybe it wants to be left alone now

Tim's computer now has a new hard drive and a "genuine windows" validated copy of XP pro. Good to know that microsoft are managing to put a stop to outrageous piracy.

Try reverting to Win98 ...
