we've got our BB installed. at last! it's BT ADSL via a radio LAN (too far from exchange to get direct) it seems to be pretty nippy for average surfing, but I'm keen to know if my ping is up to CS i'm getting an average of 800 - 900ms by testing it here similar times through command line tests from my limited knowledge, this seems a bit poo so, is this good, medium or don't even bother? i fear the latter, although i might be able to hassle them to improve things thoughts please, geek-gurus cheers

hassle them - a lot - if you can get it down to 150 to your nearset google you can play on the montreal server

uk speed test here this will tell you how many bits per second and you should know what you should be getting from the plan you signed (512kps, 1Mbps, 2Mbps etc) to find out where the latency is in your connection try this at the command line: tracert -d montreal.globalcs.org this shows you all the computers your network packets go through on the way to the montreal server and should show you where the slowest hop is - it should not be the first few hops as this will be BT's network. tracert montreal.globalcs.org will show the names of the computers - also try it to www.google.co.uk lots of graphic tools that do the same thing here

cheers guys ok, i'm getting about 1.6 - 1.8Mbps, so I'm not so worried about width, more aboout ping. I suspect that he's actually got me going through his satellite connection at the moment, rather than ADSL. I did a tracert last night and some Belgium domains came up, where the sat provider host thier main server If this is what's happened then it should be easy enough to get them to transfer us over to the ADSL link - bit sneaky of them though Anyhoo, having asked some questions at this end, is it simply ping rate that i need to be concerned about for CS? is this the protocol that CS uses? a friend reckons that our system may depriortise ping. hope my questions aren't too stoopid!

ping is the time it takes packets to traverse the network so for online gaming this is crucial - high ping == lag == dead meat your ping to the montreal server should be somewhere in the 150-200 range probably - I get high 200s and have played fine with up to about 350 get them to switch you to adsl - a ping of nearly a second will render CS unplayable

well, it does turns out that i am not yet on adsl, and ping will improve a lot when i get moved to adsl, which is good news. the switch from the sat should happen this week. I reckon i'll still be dead meat though
