I have a Canon Digital Elf SD100 - very nice features going from all automatic to all manual - you can even take long exposures without flash (if you have a very steady hand) and its got stitch assist which is extremely handy for panoramas and it works. Its the size of a cigarette packet and the newer ones are way smaller. Bad points: 2x zoom is not enough - not even close; 3.2 megapixels is fine for desktop wallpaper but its nowhere near enough to capture the textures that you see with your eye or the text on something (like "Vestas" on a wind turbine) .

i'd definitely go Canon. Run an ixus for a while and it's great. The new ones are even better and the have the best sensors. Fuji use a different pixel shape so for same megapixel get less so watch headline MP numbers.

mine's a olympus c770 in black, which i love. The cheepest place i found was on amazon but the delvery time was vrrrry slow - 3 weeks but got it for £280 which was £100 cheeper than in the shops and £200 less than MRRP; they did rip me off on meemory, said it was 128mb but only 32 when arrived - tho the price droped like a stone within a month or so. ps has movie and sound - sound on still as well.

I have a canon ixus 4, pretty neat bit of kit. I am however having problems with low battery life but i have been told to get it into the service centre in Glasgow for them to check. This is apparently not a generic problem according to the salesman Other than that I would recommend it and takes far far better pictures than my Olympus, albeit it was a 3.2.

I just bought a canon A520 for work - 4MP, 4xOptical zoom and it takes standard batteries which is good for work.
