as I am just about to seriously fuck with the server ..... it might return better and maybe even faster if i take the opportunity to OC it but there again I might just end up with a pile of scrap - hay ho who knows which way it will go

hmmmm, so as most of you predicted my attempt to install a novell cooling solution led to ...... SUCCESS!!! ha! fuck yous!!! I pimped my ride ok so I pimped the server - with the biggest motherfucking CPU heatsink you have ever seen. Notice how there is only just enough clearance to close the case... had to take it apart right down the the mounting bracket and back plate on the CPU socket. Opted for the stock thermal paste rather than the fancy schmancy silver paste I'd bought. A little bit of hand chiselling enabled me to install a 12mm ballbearing side mounted fan on it as well just to be sure it seems to be good with the fan switched on or off though so maybe when grix has installed me a wee command line health status monitor, I'll get rid of the extra few dBAs by unplugging it. Funny thing is though that after all that is wasn't my CPU fan that was causing the noise. Was an old old HD that I don't even access anymore that was screaming away on its last legs so after all that I just needed to unplug the bastard and the server is whispering away - ach well, when I decide to OC an FX-60 I've got the perfect heatsink to do it with Still daren't stand my tower up though for fear that the weight of the heat sink will snap the mobo like a dry twig ok am done

well done - nice to hear you systematically identified the source of noise before proceeding I will get your sensors for you [sigh]

yup, am nothing if not careful, methodical and thorough, no jumping to keejerk conclusions for me, had forgotten that my existing cooling solution was already a copper-cored thermaltake with ballbearing fan so the exercise was really really unnecessary - but fun and I meant to type 120mm not 12mm.

okley dokely nix 'my heatsink is bigger than yours' sensors are up and running on the game server. type' sensors' at the prompt and it gives you more info than you could possibly want most sensors will cause a speaker beep if they go out of bounds /et/rc.d/rc.sensors sets loads modules at boot time /etc/sensors.conf is your configuration file - you might want to look at it but maybe not - its auto generated and very long and super hardware geekish - just up your street

Catharine says you really need a girlfriend or boyfriend (a love interest other than your new cool heat sink )
