if you wanna run an FTP server from behind a NAT firewall, passive mode does not work and you need to forward a small range of arbitrary ports and tell your FTP server about them - kept me amused for a while....

read all about it - its not instant messaging or VOIP its A DIFFERENT THING and I thought I might introduce it to everyone at GxNx - but of course that was a stupid idea - lets just keep using the internet for watching "america's worst drivers" videos.

oh and by the way Skype is not fine. It is a piece of software owned by a private company and has these 'features':
- bypassses firewalls - its a big barn door into your computer
- peer to peer and uses any amount of bandwidth it wants - other peoples' calls can go through your machine
- how it implements its security is not disclosed and is proprietary- ie its not standard and its done badly
- one day it will be hacked and your box will become part of a skype newtork controlled by a spotty 14 year old

to be fair to mex (not sure why i would want to be but anyway) grix your IRC was not working when we tried it and so mex was obviously quite justified in dismissing it out of hand - clearly!
