Ive got an external harddrive for back up but I cant get full access read only, ive changed permissions and owenership but still the same, all tuts ive found seem a bit long winded ,should I manually mount it or is there something more obvious.....

Never got to the bottom of my external HD problem, used a work around. But now have a more serious problem - trying to get the correct key response from the keyboard, all the tuts say choose your region from the drop down menu but they are for external keyboards, the keyboard works fine under windows, is there a way to coppy/alter the ms keyboard profile or somewhere a better resource for info than the Ubuntu help pages?

You should have access if you let it auto mount - manual mounting will require you to change perms and ownership - you will have to do a recursive change so

chmod -R 0644

You should have a choice for which keyboard you are changing - there will be a dropdown somewhere....
