Wouldn't want this to fall on my head!

A 5 million! ton piece of rock is about to fall off the east side of the Eiger. The crack at the top was a few cm in the spring and it's now 7 metres. It's moving from 70cm to 1 metre a day. There are constant rockfalls kicking up enough dust to cover Grindelwald in a layer dust. Geologists reckon it could go at any time, ie: in 5 minutes or in a thousand years! In other words they don't have a scooby.

As a geologist i would say that this block of rock will fall in the next 6 months, probably in the winter when the water freezes and forces it to expand, widening the crack and leading to catastrophic failiure, so its perfectly safe to build a house just below it for 6 months or so. In fact you should move there as the view looks amazing Del what do you thinks grix as a petroleum geologist

The sooner someone gets up there and gives it a push the sooner the new climber's guidebook to bouldering on the Eiger will be out ... if it's coming away at 1m per day then I'd give it 2 months max before some enterprising type at a publishing company sees fit to act on this so that we can all have a fascinating stocking filler in time for this Xmas.
