Subject: Techie question

Hey Grix/Nix (really grix actually) What flavour of unix should i be using these days, I want to upgrade the office network, at the moment they have a windows nt4.0 file server with a grand total of 20 gigs of disc space, and a redhat webserver with 10 gigs of space on it, they havent upgraded for 6 years or so! I was going to recommend Linux, not sure what flavour, what the one in vogue at the moment which will also act as dhcp server (again they have to do this manually) and file server, (samba server). And then have a machine dedicated to web serving and could also be the mail server as well, thats been outsourced as well, but as managed to get it inhouse with designiscentral think we could manage that as well. So ladies any suggestions please. One thing is certain nt4 is going in the bin and the computers deserve to be in a museum, have two brand new pcs ready to goo!! They are still using tapes to back up!! tapes!!! tapes!! Dex

No contest - I wouldn't use anything but OpenBSD - it comes with everything you need but you will need to do some reading of the excellent man pages and docs on the website. No gui config - all text files but its very secure by default, very stable, easy to upgrade and I can answer any questions. Highly recommended - bit of learning up front but saves you much pain later. If you go the linux route it probably makes little difference and probably best to use whatever you have used before - Slackware or Debian would be my pick. Please don't use the linux distribution that is "in vogue" But for any option check the hardware in the new PCs is supported OpenBSD really is simple and well documented in one place - you don't need to google for answers and sift through all sorts of conflicting information...
