Subject: painless way to upgrade to a new HD

I noticed my 320 GB HD is getting crowded (even though I store all my DVDs on a separate 500GB drive) and also I want to add mirroring to make sure I don't wake up in a nightmare one morning (least not one I can easily avoid) so I figured I'd make use of the 500GB drive sat in my desk drawer and then go buy another when am ready to go RAID1. Anyway long and short of upgrading your windows HD without a windows install disk and without reinstalling any programmes. 1) download Ubuntu 7.04 (in my case 7.10 didnt like my PC) 2) run the live CD and start up Gnome Partition Editor (GParted) from the system menu 3) allow GParted to initialise your new drive 4) copy and paste your primary partition from the old drive to the new drive and apply 5) wait.... it might seem like nothing is happening but if you listen very closely you can just about hear the sound of your HDs going like the clappers 6) copy and paste any other partitions you want from your old drive across to the new one (you might need to make an extended partition first) 7) remember to add the boot flag to your primary partition (again in GParted) Turn off your PC and unplug your old drive and go put it in a drawer or somewhere safe. Restart your PC. There you go, simple and safe. So much so I just had to share it. Nix
