mysql server hangs on occasion not really a big hassle just reboot but it can be down for a few days before I notice Del suggested increase the number of connections that mysql can handle but thought Grix might have other ideas??

You could easily test if it is num connections by lowering and raising to see how quickly it hangs with different values for num connections. You could have a cron job to restart mysql-server automatically every night which would probably treat the symptom. Have you looked in the logs to see if there are recurring errors?
