I don't think the banks have been nationalised at all - it sounds good, but in reality george has just given his mates a final gift before leaving office. Same in the UK the banks are not completely under government control they have just been given massive amounts of cash so none of them suffer. Supposedly there are some conditions like no big bonuses for a year...ooooh dear how will they cope.

oh grix, trust you to spoil a quality mex posting with the facts. Mex does have a point though in that the two largest US sub-prime lenders, Fanny May and Freddie, have, so far as I understand, ceded ownership/control to the US government and so they have been effectively nationalised although of course whether ownership of said institutions should be considered an asset or liability I'll leave to others to postulate. The most surreal part of all of this for me is that suddenly we're all financial (or is that economic?) analysts. Sombody pinch me! Perhaps this is what going insane feels like...
