righty ho just bought me a ssd hardrive and am not trolling the weeb for info, mainly how to get all my progs settings etc on to the new hd with the minimum effort, all advise received with pleasure........

Subject: ok, my thoughts so far...
looks like I need to clone the old drive - clonezilla looks like the tool, but my hurdle at the moment is that I can not have both HDs connected at the same time, I have no cd only a 16gb usb key so not sure how to proceed, will carry on searching............

Best to do a fresh install of everything if its windows.
If it's Linux do fresh install and simply copy your /home directory from your old hard drivr onto the new install.

umm clean install, I have just spend the last two days trying to make a liveCD on a usb key to clone my drive only to find out that ubuntu 16.04 has some sort of fault in making/viewing persistent CDs. fortunately I was feking around with that while I was waiting for my sata/usb cable to arrive.
So back to square one and the easy option........

can I connect my new ssd thru usb format/install ubuntu copy home folder then open my laptop and swap disks or am I best changing the drives then formatting etc?

Backup home to USB drive. Install new sad. Fresh install. Copy home from USB.
Make your fresh user account have the same name as your old.
