anyone here got experience of using a linux based smart phone. I'd like to get something like an iPhone but I dont trust Apple cos they're evil and I'd like something like a blackberry but I dont trust windows cos they'll load it down with DRM and it will crash all the fucking time. I'd like to be able to code apps for it (openWind - mobile) and to have access to all the latest toys such as motion sensors, GPS, video playback, MP3s, email, web and phone of course. am i just a voice in the wilderness? is there something out there that will give me this much freedom and still work out of the box?

Blackerry is not windows - its made by RIM (Canadian) and all the apps you run on it are Java based I have a Windows mobile smartphone but I can also run Android on it or maybe you could look at Mobilinux also Nokia owns Symbian and is going to make it open source this has good info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_development

hmmm, so its not really Linux and its not really Java? I wonder why and if you can only run Java and not native code, what are the advantages over plain java apps on mobile phones? Anyhow, just built and ran my first Android app

but Android looks fucking great! Just playing with the virtual phone makes me want one. Hope I can get one as part of my new job [Raluca thinks I'm sad and keeps pointing out that its not a real phone]
