I'm gonna upgrade to 1.5 so I can play online. I expect to have my own high bandwidth connection by end of october. If del is gonna put up a netserver, will it be 1.4 or 1.5?

still don't know. off to see man in pincher creek next week. however, spent all this evening looking at resorts near pincher creek (PC) and montreal (MR). here's what i found and i thought you might be able to check in your book... PC________________ Castle mountain is 35 minutes away and looks about glenshee size; 3.25m/yr of snow http://www.castlemountainresort.com/mountain/maps.cfm Banff is about 3hours+ away and has three alps size resorts. the best of these is sunshine valley which has 1000m vertical and 9m snow/yr; the other two have around 500m and 3m/yr http://www.sblls.com/html/skiing/tri_area_map.html MR_______________ has lots (12+) of resorts between about 45mins and 1.5 hours away. most of these are smaller than scottish resorts with about 25 runs and 200m vertical. However, two of the better ones are: mont tremblant which is about 100km north of MR. it has 650m vert and 3.8m/yr http://www.tremblant.ca/e/themountain/trailmaps_hiver2001-2.htm Jay Peak looks pretty damn good as well with almost 9m/yr and 650m vertical http://www.jaypeakresort.com/page.asp?intNodeID=2713 so after a bit of a disappointing start its starting to look like MR has just as good a prospects for spending half the year boarding. other aspects are MR is large cosmopolitan city with the most amazingly beuatiful women i've ever seen but i'd have to learn french to stop being anglais scum if ever. PC is small remote town without adsl but lots of cowboys and bigger mountains. gonna go see it and talk to the man but its looking like MR i think - place your bets please....

If you are getting high bandwith see if you can get a "wires only" where you buy your own adsl/cable router. The one at the office died recently and I discovered that we are not allowed to use our own but have to wait for an engineer to bring a replacement. If they detect a non-BT router on the connection they can TERMINATE the account. very sucky

What is PPPoE? Do you know what is involved in setting up a self-serve ADSL connection? Is it just a case of plugging in DSL modem and if you can ping then you're laughing? I'm thinking of going with these guys as they are cheaper and offer static IP for less than £2/month extra http://www.istop.com/residential.html

I think you want an adsl router/modem with PPPoE in firmware - you can do it all in software (most OSes support it) but thats an overhead (dunno how much). PPPoE is like dial up (PPP) - it allows ISPs to monitor bandwith usage, kick people easy etc. Good for ISPs. As long as you have a static IP I think it sounds fine. Its not what we have at the office so you should maybe research on the net a bit about people's experiences. Self serve is buying an adsl router/modem with pppoe in firmware, plugging in and then setting up a machine as firewall with NAT if you have a static ip a walk in the park. then we can all try and take over your box
