Well I upgraded linux using it's in built package upgrade facility and I think I ended up with a mis-matched kernel that did not work properly with the installed software libraries / programs (my kernel was old the libs were new) So - installed solaris 9 which had just arrived as if by magic. BIG mistake - horrible os, just like linux/bsd so you think you know what your doing but you don't! Also could not get PostgreSQL compiled on it. So - haha I know lets put linux back on - fresh install, nice and clean. this was smooth - after winning a battle with the bizarre sun sparc boot system to boot linux without intervention moral - develop on the same platform you deploy and buy cheap throwaway hardware, not expensive exotic sun

PostgresSQL can be a right bitch too build i know havetried in mac land with not much luck, mysql on the other hand is quite easy to get going... hmm Kernal problems, i've got problems on this mac actually with file permissions and the root, very strange goings on me thinks.. sudo doesn't work at all times.. now appears that macs fabby system of netinfo has bugs in it oh well such is life, going to ignore it as the machine is still working and getting email... sun
