...and whilst I can play LAN games over it and ping other computers on my home network, I seem to be having a real hard time getting file sharing to work. Can I ftp between my computers? Do I need to setup an ftp server on one and if so, where can I get it? Is there a simpler way? Might I be able to setup a file sharing server on the router and where would I start?

yes you can you need a ftp client, linux comes with one, windows 98 no, but if you get the server version of windows 2000 it has got one installed.... why isn't windows networking working... sounds very strange, it should be the same in windows xp as it is in window NT.... so yes get windows 2000 installed on your server and set up an ftp server... i have a server version i think at home so will look up for you..and then wack up onto my web space, big download.... sent your tube today sorry for delay no excuse apart from being a lazy arse oh and Deep dish was brilliant at the weekend, top night of clubbing...

Subject: maybe you are blocking windows networking (SMB) ports...

are you allowing traffic over TCP ports 139 and 137 and UDP port 137 (I think that is right) - if these are blocked on the routers internal interface then file sharing will not work - DO NOT open these ports on the routers external interface

Subject: Thanx. BTW Discovered I can link routers together with xover cable...

using their LAN ports although the real triumph would be to link their WAN ports together so that they each think the other one is the internet - then I could get 8 machines on two routers rather than just six at present. Unfortunately the guy who owns the other router has forgotten his password so we can't change his router settings

Subject: Can someone please try and hack into my file system....

and leave something on the shared directory on killing-time or print something obscene on my network printer. Serious cudos (+humiliation of NIX) is up for grabs folks. BTW sending me a trojan as an attachment doesn't count as you are trusted parties - too easy!

which you can humiliate me with as the prize for your efforts but I'm pretty sure I'm locked down now - assuming Grix gave me the right port numbers - ooh bit of a security hole there...
