you were too busy pissing around on the board instead of working

Subject: Anyone know anything about RAID?

Just bought a fuckoff server (much cheaper than DELL) and am putting Mandrake Linux on it but not sure how to get the RAID up and working. Want to mirror one drive on the other but don't know how.

Subject: yup...

unless you have a raid controller card you probably want to use software raid PS lots of linux docs here I would recommend Slackware rather than Mandrake. Mandrake adds a whole heap of custom stuff to the boot up and initialisation that makes it really hard to play around with or figure out. Slacware is a lot simpler (esp when you are setting up a server). Generic docs on Unix apply a lot better to slackware than Mandrake.

was wondering if RAID is a software thing or a hardware thing

it is either all done in software - kernel with RAID support and software emulation of a raid controller OR kernel with RAID support and drivers for the hardware RAID controller there is a related HOW-TO here: ATA RAID non SCSI you will need to build a kernel with RAID support and then configure LILO to boot off the RAID disk do you need RAID? - rsync is simple and works for me. It only transfers the changes to files and you can get it to run once a night or whatever - raid mirroring will give you slightly faster reads but slower writes

Subject: Yup - because its there!

had to tinker a little but got the hardware RAID 1 working

Subject: No longer sure - IDE RAID is notoriously crapply supported...

gonna try software RAID as it still delivers 1.5 times the bandwidth (apparently) and I still would like redundancy although finding myself caring less... How's my car?
