I have two partitions: first partition is 6gb and includes /home ; second partition is 100+gb and has /usr
is it just me or is this really dumb? surely /home should be on the big partition as you can only share directories in home and this is where all the data goes
this one's free

have separate partitions for /, /usr, /home, /var this makes upgrades much easier.
you can share any directories you like but I would suggest making a directory in home and sharing that as usr contains all your userland programs and libraries (as oppposed to system programs) and you do not want that mixed up with data.
if you are sharing with windows machines you will need to use samba - www.samba.org

/
will not never more than 500Mb but why assign less
/usr
full install of all apps will need a few Gb depends on distro, 5Gb is ample
/var
if you are running a database or website the files will be stored here so you may want a few Gb otherwise 500Mb - whatever you need (2Gb?) for logs, print spools etc
/home
this is just data and users personal stuff so assign the rest of the disk
