Go for a Suzuxi DR 400 (part trail - part road) if you can go up to 400cc. If you have to stay around the 250 cc mark avoid two strokes like the plague. You say road bike but you must want to do some rough track stuff as well. Road bikes are absolutely pants at anything other than smooth tarmac.

I need you to tell me what I need - I will be limited initially by being a learner
but I also want to know what to look out for when I buy a second hand bike - brakes? suspension? oil leaks? has it been badly treated? how do I know the bike isn't fucked?
