For windows use the built in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials for anti virus
NEVER buy anti virus software they are snake oil salesmen and their products are ALL shit - I repeat NEVER PAY FOR ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE - ms security essentials is efficient, stays out of the way and does as good a job as any other.
Your best defence is to patch / update Windows and whatever browser you use as soon as updates are available - especially browser plugins (flash, pdf, java etc) - these are number one vector for exploits
Linux and Mac have built in firewalls and no need for AV

Firewall is built in - if you want a GUI:
apt-get install ufw
Anti Virus
You don't need anti virus :-) because Linux is a properly designed OS.
