so i got myself a new netgear ma 401 wifi pcmcia card with a prism 2 chipset and it just plugged and played in my old 700mhz laptop under linux - fantastic!!
later on i was trying to get my sound card working (still trying) and so was IRCing with a geek friend who asked to be given ssh access to see if he could help.
Now to digress slightly, I've been having trouble sending mail from my other laptop and thought skype might be fucking it up in some way.
Anyway, when i try to forward port 22 to my old laptop my old laptop is running on a different subnet to the rest of my network so I can't.
Turns out (aka long story short) that both my laptops are running on a neighbours network so it looks like bandwith is no longer an issue
