Rex, this is what you need. DVD Decrypter from dvddecryptor.com which is small, free, and from a very nice man who I reckon deserves a fiver! Then Nero 6.303 including Nero Recode from Nero. I already had an earlier version and updated it but if you're installing from scratch try serial number 1A23-0075-6030-1788-1833-8705. If it doesn't work let me know. Cheers for the airport rides Mex

Have done my first "back-up" and it was remarkably smooth. "DVD Shrink" worked very well with the nero engine (got 6.303). Am using PowerDVD for viewing which seems to do the job very nicely. Afterdawn seems to be the dogs bollocks. A whole new world unfolds...

ripped a uk dvd to hard disk using dvddecryptor but what about writing to dvd so I can play it in a pacific region dvd player? also it seems to be 8Gb on disk and the dvd writers only seem to write about 4.7Gb and what about all these different formats DVD-R, DVD+R which is the one to have?

not sure about pacific rim dvd player, maybe it's an option in Recode but once you've used dvddecryptor to rip it to hard drive, then use Nero ReCode (see my original message at the top of this thread) to burn it back to DVD. You can never get it compressed as small as the original but by dumping the trailers, etc you can end up with the main movie only at virtually 100% quality. DVD- and DVD+ don't matter once it's has been burnt, but you can only burn DVD - in a DVD- burner and vice versa. If you haven't bought a burner yet, the + or - one's are getting cheaper all the time, otherwise either one will do.

what I meant was burners that can burn either format as oppsosed to just one or the other!

DVD Shrink is great and levers the Nero engine. Check the guides at Afterdawn .. very useful When you get to the encode stage you can choose your region.
