Subject: need to buy a wi fi card for my laptop
My pals in switzerland have an 11g wireless network. Is 11g the most recent standard? There are plenty of cheapo 11b cards around but I don´t think these can connect to an11g network?
Clarification please

you can also find cheapo 11g cards but in answer to your question, 11b cards should work fine with 11g networks.

actually I didn't fully answer your question. 11g is newer and runs at 54Mbps (maximum) whereas 11b runs at 11Mbps (maximum - more likely half that but its still likely to be comfortably faster than your internet connection unless you've got a 10Mbps pipe like grix) 11g is backwards compatible with 11b so you should be able to mix and match. In terms of ping times and playing games and downloading I haven't noticed a difference between 11b (both my gateways are 11b) and ethernet. Its only when you do file sharing within the LAN that you notice a slowdown.
Enough info for you?

Got myself an 11g for 44quid, only ten quid more than the 11b! Don't know if that's expensive or not but Interlaken only has one computer shop and at 5 quid an hour to use an internet cafe it will soon pay for itself.
