Gaming geeks only please...

Subject: Gaming geeks only please...

so as you may have guessed I've decided not to wait for those fuckwits at valve to get their acts together before I upgrade - I'm doing it now Question: is there a more reliable guide than tom's hardware guide cos I'm really not sure I believe what they report. They say that the ATI 9200 gets a higher frame rate than the GeForce FX 5200. I've played Farcry with both and the FX5200 on an AMD 1600+ with 384MB of 133 RAM plays through the training level without any noticeable glitches when the detail is set to around medium. The ATI 9200 on a dual xeon with 1gig of dual channel 333Mhz RAM does maybe 1 frame every 3 seconds at many points and thats at low detail. The benchmarks i looked at were for call of duty granted but i really can't see how the 9200 can be even as good as the 5200. THC looks dodgy to me. Question: Is PCI Express worth waiting for? Question: would you buy the nvidia 6800 ultra or the X800 XT PE? Even with shader model 3 implemented, the 6800 seems to about match the X800 so...

Why not wait, when HL2 (eventually) comes out there will be better spec'd cards for less money

hmmm, its nice to have another site to go look at - cheers. However, I read their review of the 6800 ultra and they compared it against an X800 Pro!!! Well of course nvidia are gonna come out well in such a comparison. The X800 XT is the ATI equivalent of the ultra as every fool knows. If they're gonna compare against the Pro they should compare the 6800 GT - makes me dubious of their comparisons too -also, not sure how many implementations of the 6800 ultra will allow you to overclock.... As far as waiting for HL2, I think Far Cry is a much more important game and anyway, the spec I'm buying should cover both. I intend to play Farcry at 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 4xAF and everything set to ultra high and if it jerks am asking for my money back On that subject, you can all test your current specs for CS by typing cl_showfps in the console. You apparently want to be around the 100 mark if you want to be smooth in the midst of the mayhem. LCD screens are for wimps! I'm with grix on this - your eyes are muscles - gotta build them up by subjecting them to punishment

oh and another thing, am really starting to hate noisey machines so the fact that the 6800 is the hottest chip ever and requires a mega fan and two auxiliary power supplies makes me think that the X800 is the way to go.... don't want to water cool my system so am avoiding pentium 4s and possibly nvidia too.
