My friend in berlin has two hard drives in his machine and somehow he has a differant version of XP on each one. He has to use the one he doesn´t want to use to boot the one he does want to use! If he takes the one he doesn´t want to use out, it doesn´t boot at all and doesn´t boot from the CD rom either. If he puts the one he doesn´t want to use back it then boots from the cd rom! Is there a way to copy the boot sector (NTLDR) from one hardrive to the other?

I would get a new hard drive, bin the others and buy a new copy of XP.

take one out - make sure the one left in is configured as a master not slave (jumper on the hardrive near the power and ide connectors) cdrom should be slave boot from a windows system floppy (you can make one when you format a floppy in windows) when you have booted from the floppy type, fdisk /mbr reinstall xp put the second hardrive in on the second ide connector as a master and reformat it

Cheers, I'll suggest that.

However, switching on the computer with the no boot sector hard drive in the machine (set as primary master) seems to disable the cdrom! It didn't work with knoppix in it

is the cdrom set as slave? is it on the same ide connector as the hard drive or the secondary one? does the bios recognise the cdrom on boot?

set as primary slave, on the same ide cable but the bios does not recognise it on boot
