install java like this:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk
change to the directoy where you uncompressed the Stipple zip file then change to the linux directory within that directory
cd StippleGen_2/application.linux/
make the script executable and then run it
chmod +x StippleGen_2
./StippleGen_2
In future all you just need to do is run the StippleGen_2 script

thanks, worked a treat. Out of interest where is the best place to install progs, after a wee bit of reading I stuck it in /usr/local/share altho Im still not sure if this me/usr/local/share or root/usr/local/share. Im a bit confused by the directory structure as you can see.....

Keep everything you do in a sub directory of your home directory: eg /home/graeme/apps/ Your home dir is where you can do anything and not break the system Anywhere else you risk fucking things up Never put anything in /root as it means you are doing that as root - which is bad /boot/ is for booting :-) /etc is config files for system /usr is system installed user land programs /lib is for associated code libraries /bin, /sbin is for system binaries /var is for logs and other stuff you dont need to worry about /proc is running system info /dev has the links between physical devices and software
