aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!! have only just managed to track down a 6800 ultra with 256 MB of DDR3 and its already not enough. What do i have to do to be confident of playing all my games at full detail? you can't even buy high end gaming cards with 512 megs this is becoming an issue for me....

Interestingto read the stuff about CPU being the weakest link ... your processor upgrade sounds essential for the X800XT. I like the sound of the cards and defo prefer them to nvids current offering despite PS3 ... cool, quiet and shit hot - but ideally want a digital TV tuner on board too - not many slots in my SFF . Looks like the wait goes on and meanwhile they'll come down in price

so looks like my choice of AMD64 3400+ with 1MB cache is gonna be more than justified - just hope it can keep up. I too preferred the look of the ATI X800 XT PE but its just not coming available and the 6800 ultra is. Also, the X800 sucks at Doom3 and whilst we're still waiting for the FarCry 1.2 patch to be released, the nvidia cards do ok as it is. I don't want to run a hot noisy card if i can help it but i might be getting another knee operation in the next few weeks and so I want to be ready this time

Got any good charts on 64 bit performance vs 32 guess this is the way things ARE gonna go...

no but my local super geeks say that for gaming and multimedia, AMD is the way to go and its only gonna get even faster once people start coding for it. If you look at AMD64 vs P4 3.2 then it comes out pretty good. Check out this and you'll see that for encoding and gaming, the AMD64 comes out on top and that's not even using the 64bits - once people start writing for it (valve already have a AMD64 dedicated server exe which whilst its of little use, shows that they for one are gonna support this development) then it will leave the intels standing. Of course, Intel have had 64 bit processors for sometime now in the form of their hyperthreading P4s and Xeons but if I can buy AMD without feeling like a fool I will and plus, AMD64s run a hell of a lot cooler than their Intel counterparts (maybe I can use that to offset my 6800 ultra ).
