Can someone explain why when I run ifconfig at the command it gives a different ip to using amazons on line ip finder? as an aside is there an easy way to not to have to update my ip for ssh access everytime my provider changes my ip ( I assume that is what hapening)

amazon's on line ip finder is the external public address for use over the internet - ifconfig on the amazon virtual machine shows the actual local network address. ports are just forwarded from a router that has the public address to internal amazon virtual machine addresses not really

opps it was ifconfig on my local machine to set up incoming ssh on the ec2 virtual machine rules, the ip amazons ip finder gave worked fine but totally different from ifconfig run on my local machine, assume my request is being routed thru my provider - when i run a whois on my ip given by amazonipfinder it is in zurich
